Veho VFS 004 Slide Scanner - Terrible Quality, 17 Nov 2008
The quality of scanning is appalling. Save the money and take your slides to a shop and have them scanned. I bought this to scan old family slides for my Dad. I was really looking forward to receiving it and was extremely disapointed by the results. I am sending it back, it is not fit for purpose. The only good thing about it is the packaging.
works, even with Vista, 17 Nov 2008
Ordered this nice little device late on Friday, it was delivered this morning and set-up on my PC was relatively easy. Would have given the scanner 5 stars for easy use. However like mentioned by some previous reviewers, whitebalance is a bit a problem: most of my test negatives (from 2002) did come out much too blue. Sometimes this is easily fixed with photoshop, but still hope to find a faster way to get close to the original before converting a larger number of negatives.

Works like magic!, 17 Nov 2008
I was looking for a scanner so I could put all the old photos of my late father-in-law and the grandchildren onto a digital photo frame for my mother-in-law for Christmas. I was a bit nervous after reading the previous reviews but have to say I plugged the scanner into my laptop two days ago and have had a lovely time easily and quickly converting photos. It's a doddle to use, the photos are coming out more or less exactly like the originals and I know my M-I-L is going to be absolutely thrilled, as am I. I'm going to get a lot of use (and pleasure) out of this marvellous little machine.
Great Value for the money, 15 Nov 2008
Looking at the many reviews this product seems to be like Marmite, you either love it or hate it....well i can say I brought one and I love it. It's certainly one of the cheapest devices that converts old slide and negs, I found image quality more than good enough for the task I had...I think you have to bear in mind that slides are over 30 years old and when originally developed did have a tendency to over expose, therefore the scanner will just replicate the original slide, the problem is not apparent on negatives, just a small proportion of slides. Taking this into account I cannot understand the negative reviews, especially as I emailed Veho to ask about extra slide trays...they answered within 5 minutes! All in all 5 stars for price, quality and speed of scanning
Avoid at all costs. This is a very poor quality plastic toy, 14 Nov 2008
I placed an order for the Veho VF-004 5MP Negative & Slide Scanner after reading 3 very positive reviews. I was especially attracted to the idea of converting all those old slides into JPG images that I could then view on my laptop. I now believe those reviews must have been written by someone connected to the supplier! This item is no more than a very poor quality plastic toy which does not deliver any useful images whatsoever. The images created were appalling, with the vast majority of detail being completely lost. No wonder it comes with image enhancing software! Although, of course, it did not really help because it is not possible to recreate detail that was actually lost in the scanning process. The results were so poor, I thought the unit must be defective so I organised a replacement which turned out to be equally poor. I am very surprised that Amazon have anything to do with this item, especially since the supplier fails to respond to any emails and cannot be contacted by phone because they are ex-directory. AVOID THIS ITEM AT all COSTS!

cloning problem, 07 Nov 2008
I received my 4400f very fast, Thank you Amazon. but,,, I am having trouble trying to use the Clone tool. After scanning the document I click on the clone window, and try to use it, Then a small window keeps popping up saying, "please shift + click," I have tried shifting,, left mouse clicking, every thing possible, but that window pops up every time I click my mouse, I even re-loaded the whole programme again as per the book, Please help, Regards,,,,, George,,
Does exactly what it says on the tin, 06 Nov 2008
I've had an Epsom scanner (too complicated) and a Veho (couldn't get it to work) so purchased the CanoScan 4400F with some trepidation. However it does exactly what it says: it's very user friendly - easy start up and operation. Good, speedy helpline for problems (only problem so far is that I'm IT thick!)and the results are good even on 60-year-old negatives. Only downside is that it is slowish and the negative holder seems flimsy, but all in all I think it's the best piece of IT equipment I've bought. Ideal for the novice.
CanoScan 4400F - Slide scan, 17 Oct 2008
Okay it's not quick, but for the money i am very happy with the results and high quality images - slides to p.c.
Cannon 4400F - Excellent product, 02 Oct 2008
CanoScan 4400F Scan with Quality & Versatility
In one word, this product is "superb".
I was given a slide / negative converter for my birthday. This item was a lightbox, being a tall box, with a negative / slide holder. The results were awful, with totally burnt out slides and poor quality negatve prints. It was cumbersome to use and not at all user friendly. Luckily, we persuaded the supplier to give a refund.
The Canon 4400F, in contrast, gives amazing results, with accurate exposures and colours. It is easy to use and I can fnd no faults with it. The only downside is a bulky unit, which if you have a scanner already, does take up extra space on your work surface. However, this is a small price to pay, and I unplug and store the unit when not in use. I recommend the 4400F, without reservation, and wonder why anyone would buy a higher specification model. The price is a bargain and delivery from Amazon came within a couple of days. The transfer to digital is fairly fast and the software supplied very straightforward. I now have the pleasant task of unearthing all my old negatives and slides and sorting out the ones I wish to trasfer to digital, before creating photobooks to display those old memories.
Does what it says on the tin, 26 Sep 2008
This device does what it's designed to do - no fuss, no complications, just slick operation straight out of the box. I use it with my Mac Book for scanning old 126 slides and it makes a tiresome (but worthwhile) task fairly pain-free if tackled in bite-sized chunks. The supplied software is intuitive and the build quality is high - in short it's very good value and highly recommended.
An excellent alternative to ink-jet printers., 03 Nov 2008
Having grown sick and tired of ink-jet printers, I decided to have a look at lasers and was pleasantly surprised by the price of the P1005. I only need basic black and white capabilities, and thanks to the previous reviewers' comments, it was a bit of a no-brainer when it came to making a decision! I'm not disappointed.
The P1005 doesn't take up much room, it look fairly solid, the software is quick and easy to install (I'm running Windows XP) and the print quality is excellent. Okay, it's a bit noisy (but no more so than my ink-jet) and the paper does warp very slightly (I haven't tried better quality paper yet - so maybe it's just down to the cheap brand I've been using so far) and it doesn't come with the necessary USB cable. However, in terms of value for money, I couldn't be happier.
Great for home use, 02 Nov 2008
This printer is cheap and comes with a toner which is roughly 50% full, and unfortunately with no USB cable. For home use this is a perfect printer, that is reasonably fast and produces very good quality prints. Printing is cheap and the toner works even after long periods without being used - I keep another Laserjet P1005 in my holiday home in Italy, so that I can print when I am there, something I could never do with an inkjet. I think most users do not need a colour printer, since photos are too expensive to print at home with a colour inkjet on photo paper anyway. I do recommend this printer for home use.
Nice little Laserjet for Home/Student use, 11 Oct 2008
I am using this HP P1005 Laserjet printer with my Apple 13" Macbook running OSX Leopard (10.5). I purchased this over the similarly priced Canon i-SENSYS LBP2900B Laser Printer due to the lack of Macintosh drivers from Canon and the many positive reviews for HP I came across when researching small monochrome laser printers on the internet.
Installation was quick and simple and inside the box was a leaflet for a £35 rebate from HP on the condition that you complete 2 surveys on your printer usage over a year, which was a pleasant surprise.
The printer is very compact and folds away its trays neatly when there is no paper inside. It powers-up very fast and is relatively quick to process information prior to printing.
The main criticisms I find with this printer however are that the heat produced from printing will bend your paper slightly, the supplied toner cartridge is only half-full (marketed as a "trial" cartridge), there is no USB cable supplied in the box and if you're printing more than 10 pages you begin to notice that laser-printer ozone smell, a necessary byproduct of the printing process.
Criticisms aside for around £50 this is a good quality printer. Full toner cartridges are around £40 but they are good for approx. 1500 sheets resulting in printing costs of around £0.03p (~£0.02p/sheet, not inc. paper). A good purchase and very useful for homes, small business' and students who do not require to print in colour.
No frills sensation, 08 Oct 2008
Got this printer last week for £53 with internet collect at store deal. Came with half full "introductory cartridge" which is good for 700 pages and worth about £20-25 I would guess. Have used it with no problems on Imac and Windows XP (running on bootcamp on Imac).. Basically my previous all in one inkjet cost loads in ink then just broke, and never seemed particularly reliable. I am very happy with this printer as it is cheap, prints much more quickly than my last printer (though I understand it is still quite slow for an inkjet) and occupies not too much space on my desk. Quality is fine for my admittedly fairly basic needs.
great printer, 04 Oct 2008
I was sick of spending a fortune on printer carts. for my Epson all in one printer which went through them at a insane rate. Most things I print really only need b & w so I now use this for most printing and bought a Cannon all in one for colour stuff. This is so quick and cheap to use I wish I had done this years ago! Have been printing for ages on the first cart although it is £40.00 odd for the carts this is just such a sensible buy with no problems that I have found yet.

Veho VFS001, 14 Nov 2008
This is excellent value for money. After a few hours fiddling with it to try and get it to work (the instructions were'nt very good)I got it working.
I have spent hours and hours sorting through hundreds of old 35mm negatives of my wonderful mum and dad who are both now gone. I now have them both captured forever on disc. I'm just sorry I can't show them, they would love it.
By editing the photos on screen, some of them are clearer than the original photos.
Good value for money, recommeded.
Digitise your old negatives, 08 Nov 2008
I am finding this device a wonderful way of digitising my 35mm negatives from my pre-digital days. These are "snaps" that I just wanted digitised and the quality is fine for this purpose (i.e. as good as the original prints).
On my 3 year old computer everything has worked like a dream. Just be patient and wait 10 secs or so for the unit to calibrate the image before capturing it. I did try the device on a six year old computer but it was too slow to be tolerable so beware. It's probably best to read all these reviews to be aware of the many potential problems before they occur.
As Duncan Brady helpfully says in his review, the device is less impressive when it comes to slides. They look burnt out. However, like him I also found that capturing the image before the machine has had time to calibrate it resulted in a better but still unimpressive image (not as good as the negative scans).
Luckily, I have a friend who has a Nikon scanner that will do quality scans of slides, though I will be asking for only a few scans due to the time it takes on these more professional (and expensive) products.
Finally, the Veho itself is a really neat quality device (excepting the cheap film/slide carriers) which was unexpected at this price. It has been easily worth the purchase price for my application. It may be even cheaper second hand.
Best Value for Money and excellent results, 29 Sep 2008
I was secptical about buying this scanner after reading a few reviews. But as it was the cheapest I gave it a go. But I think I got more for my money and was really pleasently surprised when I started using it. It is a compact unit which doesnt take up much space. Works exactly as it says on the box, although you do need to read the manual to get the best results. The scanning glass and lights also need to be cleaned (cleaning brush included) quite often, but I think that may be more due my negatives. The included software is adequate if you just want to transfer the pictures, but can get free software from the web if you want to really transform the pictures. Another plus is that it draws the power from the USB port and therefore doesnt have an external power adapter. This scanner does the job and works first time. Highly recommended.
Avoid!, 25 Sep 2008
I chose this to scan some old transparencies and found it to be a shocking piece of junk - cheaply made and error-prone. I spent 4 hours struggling to make it work properly, endured numerous reboots and reinstalls and ultimately suffered a fatal error. In that time I managed to successfully scan just 4 slides. Life is too short - look elsewhere. I sent it back and bought a Canon scanner instead, which was cheaper, better made and worked straight from the box. See link - recommended! CanoScan 4400F Scan with Quality & Versatility
Not sure what to think yet?, 12 Sep 2008
I am trying to get it to work, but keep getting the same error message: "Could not connect capture pin #0 to Grabber. Is the capture device being used by another application?"
Has anyone else had this error message? What does it mean and how do I fix it?

What does it mean and how do I fix it?
great value, 05 Nov 2008
Bought this on the strength of two things - reviews and price. Couldn't be more pleased with it. OK it's not the best in the world but for my purposes it fits the bill very well. Didn't cost the earth, scans documents and film at a very acceptable quality and has sufficient user control to make it that bit more flexible without being at all difficult to operate.
satified customer, 31 Oct 2008
I purchased the Epson Perfection v200, for £67.32. I ordered on the 29th oct, expecting to wait a few days, but on the 31oct the scanner arrived.
Seems to work ok with the slides and film I used (some 30 years old), excellent service from Amazon, and a good product. Anyone tell me how to transfer from the file manager to a folder??? would be grateful, thank you. Got it before money taken from Bank. That cant be bad.
Great value, 28 Oct 2008
Haven't had a chance to test it in detail yet but the quality, especially for a scanner of this price, and for a scanner generally is very good - I have scanned a few film slides and documents and these all with basically the default settings were excellent and fast enough for me (an average user).
I followed the setup instructions step by step and had no setup issues at all. I would point out that Epson could improve the overall feel of the software included - the install left multiple folders and duplicate shortcuts in my start menu and the software feels a little bit at times, from the user interface side, like a collection of programs rather than a suite. This does not impact on the ability to use the scanner though.
I cannot give it five stars though as it arrived with a very slight 'film' of something on the UNDERNEATH of the glass scan area which forced me to take the scanner apart to clean it off.
Overall I would recommend this to anyone looking for a budget scanner or even something breaking into the mid-range. One thing other manufacturers could take some note of is the quality of the cabling - lovely rubber feel to the USB cable which has already lost nearly all of its kinks (I have a USB cable, I think from a monitor, which is nearly five years old and despite best efforts is still in a mess).
Hesitant But Pleasant, 11 Oct 2008
After ten years, my faithful Visioneer scanner finally packed up, so I chose the Epson Perfection as its successor.
My main reasons for being attracted to this particular model were its resolution and ability to scan negatives and slides. Neither of which disappointed - the scanning speed was wonderfully fast and preparing negatives/slides inside the special frame wasn't too tricky once one figured out the basics. Admittedly I did have some trouble working out what the Document Cover was, before discovering its something clipped onto the scanner lid to keep the light used only for film scanning shielded when not in use. This can be a little fiddly to get back in place once you've taken it off.
Additionally, while the scanning speed is rapid, the machine is more hesitant when initializing a scan. Not that noticeable if you're only intending to scan a page or two, but when I was processing hundreds of small panels, it became very apparent.
The scanner opens from the left side in a book-type fashion, I guess since most people are expected to put it on their right to account for right-handedness. However, I have no space on that side of my desk so I have to put up with reaching over a little way to get the paper in. This isn't too major an issue, though.
The power button on the front is a very handy feature, since my old scanner would stay on unless you unplugged it from the mains. Alongside its energy efficiency while running, this makes it a good choice for saving a few pennies.
My biggest qualm has to be with the scanner software, which has recently developed an annoying glitch that causes it to shut down after every three scans. I don't know whether this is my computer or just the way the software is programmed.
The scanner itself is a worthy buy, and well recommended!
Epsom V200, 04 Oct 2008
Purchased to digitise my old 35mm negative. Does this very effectively altough the process is slow and fiddly. However, for the price it is a very good value if you have the time! Having to lift the scanner lid and then the negative tray hinged door to fit and remove the neagtive strip is the area I think Epsom could have made more user friendly, but the quality of the TIFF/jpg produced can't be faulted and overall I would recommend.

Nice printer, 19 Nov 2008
A good, trouble free printer. No problems in use or installation. Print quality is more than acceptable, even on really cheap paper. Also nice and small so it doesn't get in the way when not in use.
A good little printer, 30 Oct 2008
This is a good little printer with a small footprint, good build quality, very easy set-up, the reassurance of HP reliability, and a design that is easy on the eye. It took me only a few minutes to set up, following HP's step-by-step instructions, and immediately delivered a good quality print. It was recommended by a technician friend as worth the few extra pounds it costs compared with its cheaper rivals and I have not been disappointed.
A 'kettle lead' to connect the printer to the mains is supplied. If you do not already have a current-style printer cable (4 pin USB type A to 4 pin USB type B) you will need to buy one.
A great little printer, 22 Oct 2008
In stark contrast to Jonathan Agensky's review, I am happy to report that this printer actually does perform outstandingly well on a Mac!
Its installation this evening has been remarkably straight forward: the drivers just asking where to install to. Moments later and with the USB cable plugged in, the printer was ready to print.
Warm-up time is very quick: from stand-by, the first page appearing within about 4-5 seconds. The lack of LCD display is mitigated by Self Test / Configuration / Supply Status Page options within the print driver, which give an indication of Total Jobs printed, Approx Pages Remaining from the toner cartridge, amongst other things.
The printer has a very small footprint. Print quality is excellent - both text and image production are on a par with more expensive LaserJets that I've used. An Eco print mode is available for conserving toner and when comparing Eco to 'normal' print quality, I can't see a great deal of difference.
If I really had to nitpick... the P1006 is a touch louder during operation than my old Samsung ML-1210 (which this printer replaces), but it really isn't a big deal.
Overall, I'm very pleased. The P1006 is step up from my ML-1210 and is an absolute bargain at under £60!
Utterly Useless On a Mac, 24 Sep 2008
I completely regret purchasing this unit, and you will too, if you are using a mac. Moreover I completely regret listening to the recommendations of the sales team at CanCom in Cambridge -- who assured me that this was machine would perform outstandingly well on a mac. Because it really doesn't. And I believe this is known to HP who have a very stock set of tech directions to ostensibly sort it out. But it hasn't and doesn't... and most likely won't for you either! Thus far I have spent hours trying to configure and reconfigure this machine... almost as long as I have been waiting for a measly 1mb pdf to print. But it won't... and won't for you either! Best of luck to all you mac printer shoppers looking for a well performing monochrome laser printer... and if you find one (which you might if you heed the above) let me know. Cheers.

Have not tried slides yet.Veho VFS-004 5MP 35mm Negative & Slide Scanner
I sent it back and bought a Canon scanner instead, whi | | |
