Not worthy of the Philips name, 17 Nov 2008
I bought this when my reliable Daewoo box was rendered useless by a Freeview transmitter update, and what a disappointment!
The remote control is a miserable affair, tiny, with totally symmetrical keys so you can hold it upside down and wonder why it doesn't work!
When it's working the box is good but it often loses its on-screen graphics and often locks up necessitating the power being switched off and on, it then goes through its start up routine.
I think we expect better than this from Philips
great box at a bargain price, 13 Nov 2008
My old philips freeview box stopped working after 2 years, but this box seemed better designed and I sensed that it will not have the problems described in some of the other reviews. This is because we have a roof mounted aerial with a good signal.
As with our old philips box, the picture is perfect and the menu of this model is much better. I also like the layout and design of the remote control.
Setup was very easy and I have now used it for 2 weeks. It worked perfectly and I did not have to restart it once.
Great product at a good discounted price.
BUGGY, 26 Oct 2008
Bought two of these. Both intermitant faults. Sotware crashes, box locks up from time to time. Philips used to make some really good kit, very surprised. My advice spend a little more, getsomething decent, and make sure you check out some reviews. PHILIPS DTR220 - Dosnt do what its supposed to and thats just provide hassle free digital tv, so its no point in having one. Youll just end up with whipped dog syndrome, cursing at it and so forth when it malfunctions.
Another disappointing box of freeze, 21 Oct 2008
I bought the Philips as a bigger brand to gain improvements over a poor picture provided by my original supermarket own brand box. Whilst the picture quality is superior, numerous problems began to emerge with this product. It regularly freezes, the interactive button does nothing at all and now and then it turns off my television! I returned it as faulty and the second box exhibits exactly the same fault. Philips technical helpline tell me its all my problem because the signal must be weak in my area! It isn't, my other unbranded box gets interactive services with no problem and does not freeze or turn off my television randomly. I have to say that despite my love of my Philips TV, this box is absolute rubbish.. as is Philips technical helpline. I would advise everyone to give this pile of poo a miss.
Very good Freeview, 12 Aug 2008
I was a bit disappointed when I read the numerous bad reviews for this Freeview box, as when I initially read the description and spec's it all sounded pretty good. I tried looking for an alternative Freeview box but was rather surprised by the real lack of quality set top boxes on the market. It seems that just about every box is made by a little heard of manufacturer who make it their aim to make the most hideous looking box on the market. Because of this I decided to take a chance and go for the Philips which at least came from a fairly reputable manufacturer and looks good.
Having bought and used the DTR220 for a couple of months now I have to say I am very impressed, and slightly confused as to why this item currently only has such a low rating. The box itself is very neat and compact, with the actual footprint being smaller than a DVD case and around twice as thick. It is finished in a stylish gloss black so it will match beautifully the current trend of gloss black TV's sitting on black glass stands.
Although this box is around £10 more expensive than some of the other boxes on the market, its worth bearing in mind that it does come with a scart lead which you might have to buy for around £10 if you buy another box anyway.
Hooked up to my digital aerial I have got a good signal on all the Freeview channels. I get little to no glitches with this box which is very impressive considering the problems Ive had in the past with other boxes. The EPG is great and easy to work with. It is also pretty quick when loading so you wont be pulling your hair out trying to find out what programme is on next.
Based on my experience with my DTR220 I have to highly recommend this item, despite the other critical reviews. My only real criticism is the "loading" time when you switch it on from stand by, but even that is a minor issue. This is a great looking box that works brilliantly when hooked up to a decent digital aerial. What more could you ask for!

Product Description
This AUGUST USB Freeview HDTV Receiver is a "magic wand" as it can turn your laptop or desktop computer to a high definition personal multimedia centre that allows you to watch over 30 free digital channels, listen to over 20 digital radio stations, record your favourite TV programmes on your hard drive or burn it onto a DVD.
It comes with a professional and user friendly software interface, mini antenna and remote control. All you need to do is to plug the device into a USB port of your computer, insert the CD and install the software by following the instructions. Your computer will start working immediately for you as a portable TV and recorder. You can watch TV programmes live or record onto your hard drive to watch later.
An indoor antenna is provided to watch Freeview in the areas where the signal is strong, an amplified antenna may improve reception and a rooftop aerial should be used in some regions. An aerial adaptor is also provided for you to connect this device to your roof top aerial.
Please note that there may be difficulty to receive freeview TV signal by the included portable antenna in some areas where the signal is not sufficiently strong. This is due to that the freeview service (www.freeview.co.uk) in the UK does not fully support portable TV antenna at present. The reception will be improving along with the progress of Digital Switchover Program(http://www.digitaluk.co.uk). A signal amplifier or booster may improve reception capability in regions where the signal is marginally strong. (please note that reception capability may also be affected by various factors such as proximity to freeview TV/digital radio transmitters, tall building structures, thick walls, ceilings and etc.). A rooftop TV aerial may be required to watch freeview channels in regions where the signal is insufficient for a portable antenna.

A cheerful device with great price!!, 07 Nov 2008
I find the August USB Tv receiver fantastic! It's a nice gadget at an attractive price. It works perfectly fine on my IBM. The set up was very simple following the instruction. The blazevideo software is easy to use and the interface looks cool with a bundle of different features!
I use the supplied aerial since I don't have a rooftop aerial. I assume the freeview signal where I live will be good as I am living in London zone 2. Given the price is cheap I thought it is worth a go.
It came up about 52 channels on the EPG list included 8 or 9 radio channels. I am very glad as it has most of the channels I like: ITV1-3 Sky sports news, E4+1, Sky Three, Five, Five US BBC1, BBC2, BBC3 BBC news 24,Sky news 24, and some shopping channels etc. It has more channels than the previous TV card I used on my PC. But it does depend on the signal strength of the area you live and the aerial location.
The TV subtitle works fine and the picture quality of the channels that i did get is surprisingly clear. Very impressed.
This small usb device is great value for money and lots of fun! Highly recommend!
Amazing kit, 05 Nov 2008
This is an amazing device, I am very impressed that such a tiny device can turn my laptop to a digital TV and recorder. The set up was easy, put the autorun disc into the CD drive, install the driver and Blaze player, then scan for channels. I could not get any channels using the small antenna provided where I live, which is not a surprise for me after reading other people's review, fixing to an ordinary roof aerial solved this problem, and easily picked up all the Freeview channels and radio. The remote is very handy and gives me more freedom to control the programs. Over all, very happy about this item, excellent value for money.
Not worth 1 star Dont buy this, 30 Oct 2008
I decided to buy this product after a colleague had bought a similar device from a supermarket and had some success in receiving numerous channels.Do not buy this product you will only be disappointed. The quality is flimsy the aerial lead is too short and it has never found a channel in my experience in any place i have tried around the country. After assuming it must be the area that i was in ,i then proceeded to connect the device to the house aerial which i have no problem obtaining every available channel with my digibox. However this product managed to find 4 in total which is beyond belief.Do not buy this product it is only a waste of money.
Not worth the effort, 15 Oct 2008
This item is very flimsy and simply did not work. The aerial connection is extremely fragile. The supplied aerial found no channels at all. I plugged in a portable aerial (that picks up all channels when plugged into a TV in the room) and got a message saying "no signal". Also, the USB ports on my PC are on top of each other, the USB stick for this device is so large that I cannot plug anything into the USB port below at the same time, effectively for me takes 2 USB ports! There are no installation instructions which I guess is not a great loss as it is fairly simple - insert the CD, load the drivers, plug in the USB but when there are problems more instructions/help would be useful. For instance, should the LED on the USB be on? On mine it is not. Does that mean there is a fault? Who knows. Definitely going back.
Great TV, 04 Oct 2008
I followed all instructions to the letter and was lucky enough to have a rooftop aerial connection. When searching for channels it showed 'no signal' constantly and I thought I had a major problem but when finished it showed 66 channels found. I have been able to watch TV and record programmes etc. So far, I'm very satisfied with this item - not bad for a 71 year old lady!!!

TT-Micro, 11 Sep 2008
Really dated digibox. Every time you turn it off and back on by remote a message comes up which you don't seem to be able to switch off permanently. Every time it's turned off at the wall, the software updates when you switch it on again which takes about 15 minutes. The TV guide is really slow to load and the sound drops which is also annoying. Overall very disappointed.
not good... waste of time, 18 Jul 2008
bought 2 of these for my daughters rooms . easy to set up.. 1 had intermittent sound very annoying so sent that one back.. other one worked fine for two occations.... then got stuck on standby so this one going back too, so all just a waste of time stay clear! i would say you only get what you pay for but have got the DIGIHOME box only a few pounds more which has been fine, so think i will stick to them...Digihome DV940B Set Top Box
Not the best choice i made, 10 Jul 2008
It took 25 minutes to update when i first switched on. Worked fine for a day then lost channels. Had to go back for a replacement. The new one updated quickly and i have all the channels.
EPG and options are good. Easy to use and logical.
Seperate TV/Radio list doesnt work.
Remote control is aweful. The signal, not the remote itself, but i have to press the buttons sometimes 5 times before it registers with the box. If im inputting a 3 digit channel, it will regularly not get the 3rd digit in time. I sit around 10ft from the box and its no better if i move closer.
DOES NOT LIKE being switched off overnight. We turn everything off at the wall when not in use and this didnt like it. We've had to set up a seperate socket for this to stay on. Its being relegated to the bedroom and then can be left on. The Yamada we have upstairs works in seconds from being switched off for days. Thats coming downstairs.
Not the best digi box. Spend a couple more quid and try something else.
tt-micro, 28 Apr 2008
i got this last week, all was good, i had it hooked up and working in less than 5 minuites, then when i went to watch some of the bbc channels the sound kept breaking up, i bought this freeview box to replace another which had no problem picking up the signals.

Fantastic, love it!, 18 Nov 2008
This is a magic device and I loved it immediately. I can now watch and record my favourite TV shows in perfect quality on my new laptop. The set up was easy and straightforward. I could not get any channels using the small antenna provided, which is not a surprise for me as the Freeview switchover in our region will be 2012. Fixing to an ordinary roof aerial it easily picked up 68 Freeview TV and radio channels, amazing! The remote is very handy. The device can also be scheduled to record TV programs at a particular time in case you are not in. Overall, I am very pleased and look forward to spending a lot of time with it.
If you need a compact little heater this is it!, 14 Nov 2008
Purchased (about £30 at the time) as I wanted to be able to watch TV on my PC on the odd occasion. Loaded up the software plugged in my roof antenna and found 70 stations and off we went. Good picture pretty happy with the experience. After a few months I happened to notice that the unit was worryingly hot to the touch, I was pretty concerned so I called DVB support but said that this was normal and should not affect the units performance.
Guess what! Seven weeks out of warranty the unit lost signal the LED dimmed and the unit got EVEN hotter and I assume finally fried itself in the process, I contacted support but they were not interested as out of warranty. No replies to my emails either.
I have given it one star for as it was good while it lasted and it helped to heat my bedroom.
DONT BOTHER, 05 Nov 2008
Full signal and 100% signal quality and yet the sound keeps breaking up as does the picture, antenna supplied is pointless, i am 50 metres from a transmiter using an external aeriel so if you are further away than this from a transmiter dont waster your money
Great price, great device, 01 Aug 2008
First of all, the supplied antenna was no use at all, but no surprises there. I got no channels using that, when I used the adapter and plugged it into my main antenna however, I got 70 services. The picture quality wasn't quite a match for my TV, but it wasn't a million miles away.
Secondly, the supplied software isn't particuarly inspiring. It gets the job done but in a rough around the edges kind of way. If your a Vista user I strongly recommend using Windows Media Centre instead; you can't use the supplied remote but the picture quality and EPG are far superior.
Overall, a great bit of kit for the price, highly recommended.
Pretty good, depending on ...., 10 Jul 2008
August PC/Laptop USB Freeview/HDTV Receiver - Black (Star Winner from 'What Hi-Fi', 'What Video' & 'Active Home' Magazines) - Vista Compatible
Brought this as a gift for my father and tested it out before I gave it to him. I tested the device in two locations with two different aerials and the results were very variable.
Tested at work with supplied aerial, 3rd floor near a window. I could not receive any channnel's at all, very disappointing. Tested at home, again with the supplied aerial. This time I got 9 channels but some were the radio stations.
When I plugged this into my household aerial however the results were much better. Device found 66 channels, all the major TV stations and with excellent picture quality.
The supplied software seems ok, it has an EPG and allows you to record TV straight to MPEG 2 files. It did slow down a bit on my work windows XP machine but that could have been down to the PC itself (quite an old model).
Although I only did a few quick tests of this thing I was overall quite impressed. The only problems I had came from using the supplied aerial. I would probably advice anyone to through it out straight away. Investing a further £10 in a better quality portable aerial would be a very wise investment.

When it's working the box is good but it often loses its on-screen graphics and often locks up necessitating the power being switched off and on, it then goes through its start up routine.

great box at a bargain price, 13 Nov 2008
My old philips freeview box stopped working after 2 years, but this box seemed better designed and I sensed that it will not have the problems described in some of the other reviews. This is because we have a roof mounted aerial with a good signal.
As with our old philips box, the picture is perfect and the menu of this model is much better. I also like the layout and design of the remote control.
Setup was very easy and I have now used it for 2 weeks. It worked perfectly and I did not have to restart it once.
Great product at a good discounted price.

WinTV-HVR110 Review, 10 Nov 2008
Hauppauge WinTV HVR1100 - Vista ready Hybrid PCI TV Tuner. Analogue / Digital freeview TV on your PC!
This was a waste of money and a huge disappointment. It is installed on PC with a dual core processor & 3gbytes+ of memory, running Vista and it runs like a dog. Most of the time it can't find the digital stations, and on the analogue stations the lipsync is all over the place. I should have returned the item as not fit for purpose, but never got around to it.
Software issues, 02 May 2008
As others suggested, the bundled software is really slow on changing channels, even on my quad core 4GB ram system. It is to do with the software itself. Windows Vista users can use the build in Media centre software instead.
BUT it will only choose between Analogue or Digital tuning, NOT BOTH.
To change between the two, you need a rescan/setup.
This makes having a hybrid A/D tuner a bit pointless.
Bottom line, picture quality is as good as any TV card but I suggest the digital only versions instead.
hvr-1100, 09 Feb 2008
I am currently running a pc with vista Home Premium, I had a previous bad experience with a Dazzle USB D-TV stick...dont buy it, it doesn't like vista, and took over 3 hours to clear it out the registry.(it does not uninstall!!!)
I bought the Hauppauge card as there are a number of good reviews online, the advice that I picked up was this....
connect up the device, turn on the computer.
DO NOT instal any of Hauppauge software at this stage, windows has the drivers preinstalled.
Thats it...go into media centre, set up the tv.
The remote that it comes with will work most of the media centre functions, open up the files in the installation cd, and find the file IR32.exe this will install the software for the remote to work media centre.
It was as easy as that, I couldn't recoment this product enough.
...although the box stated HVR1100, the chip on the card read HVR1110...I believe that this is the updated model.
Drivers have been sorted, 06 Jun 2007
As of the end of May 2007, the XP drivers have been sorted... I have over 50 channels available and I'm not even in a supported digital area (peak district)... good picture, although a little blurred at 1920x1200... but I expected that. everything works as it should. You will need a digital enabled aerial though.
Beware, new HVR-1100 is actually HVR-1110, 14 Mar 2007
I have had several other Win-TV cards in the past 10 years or so, and to be honest they have performed well. Before I ordered thsi card I did a lot of research and the HVR-1100 had received some very good reviews and it appeared to do all I needed, so I ordered it.
The delivery arrived fine, box was marked HVR-1100, all the bits were in the box and I'd already downloaded the latest drivers from the web-site for this card. Installed the card in a PCI slot, and noticed that it looked different than I had expected it to look, as it was a triangular board, not oblong.
Booted up, Windows XP [Home SP2] detected the card and asked for the drivers, I pointed it at the latest ones I'd already downloaded, and the card was installed. I then installed WinTV2000 and all the other bits.
Launched WinTV2000 and it asked if I wanted it to scan for channels, I replied yes, and off it went.....analogue channels found 9, digital channels found 0. Which is odd as we have a high-gain digital aerial and 2 other devices in the house that find almost 60 digital channels [one is a set-top box, the other is a 32" TFT TV with built-in Freeview].
I contacted technical support at Hauppauge and they suggested I try the latest Beta drivers and software as this is a known problem with this card, at this point I realised that this was an HVR-1110 I had been sent, not a HVR-1100 [which doesn't suffer from this problem].
Dowloaded an tried the latest beta drivers and software. scanned again, same results. Several calls later with technical support it is clear that this card [HVR-1110] has a major problem with Digital using the current available [and beta] drivers. Further suggestions involved me uninstalling various software and sending them my PC, as the problem 'may' be due to the power supply [NOT].
So, to wrap-up, I have returned the card to the seller as 'not fit for purpose' and also 'not as described' as well as 'faulty'. The real HVR-1100 card [oblong] is fine, the new HVR-1100 [triangular and really a HVR-1110] should be avoided at all costs at this time.
Hopefully this will stop anyone else having to go through what I have in the last week, If you want a good alternative, I'd suggest the HVR-1300 as Hauppauge haven't yet re-engineered that card.

Spend a couple more quid and try something else.

i got this last week, all was good, i had it hooked up and working in less than 5 minuites, then when i went to watch some of the bbc channels the sound kept breaking up, i bought this freeview box to replace another which had no problem picking up the signals.
TV stick success, 03 Oct 2008
If like me you have wasted good money looking for a USB TV stick that works with Windows Media Center in Vista, then look no further. The Hauppauge WinTV-Nova-T works perfectly. Just install the drivers provided on disk and away you go. Can't tell you about the WinTV software as I didn't install it, but it does work well with Total Media 3 software, which I also use.

Very good..., 02 Aug 2008
I am shocked this has received so many negative reviews. I have had it for a couple years now and I think it is very good. Paid £25 for it at PC World. True, the software is a little fiddly but once installed it works very well. As another reviewer commented - it doesn't matter how much you spend on the TV tuner if your ariel/reception is no good. It also works with the Vista Media Centre and in Linux. A bargain for £18 delivered!
Buyer Beware, 24 Jul 2008
Seemed like a good idea at the time but basically it doesn't work very well if at all. It seems to depend not only on where you live but also whether you can/want to plug your existing TV aerial into it. While this is understandable there is not enough of a warning on the box or in the accompanying "spin". Does explain why it's being sold off so cheaply though! Buyer Beware
Useless, 12 Mar 2008
I bought this because i wanted to digitise TV programs to watch on my iphone. It's currently sitting on my shelf, unused and useless.
1/ I have a webserver installed on my laptop. Amazingly, the software for this device wiped my webserver, and installed its own over it. This is inept, lazy, careless programming and has caused me a lot of problems. Sofware should NEVER do something like this without explicitly warning the user, but there was no warning whatsoever. I was just left wondering where my webserver went!
2/ The software that comes with the prodict, which supposedly should allow me to schedule recordings is unusable on my Dell Latitude D820 because for some unknown reason, the 2 buttons that kick the process off are cropped off in their window, meaning it's impossible for me to press them! More lazy, un-tested software!
3/ Finally, since I couldn't schedule a programme, I tried to record a programme live. Ths was a complete failure. Only a few minutes were recorded. It was a very strange experience, and I'm guessing that if I left the software running for a few hours after the programme had finished then it might have succeeded, but this would have been way too much hassle.
Great little Gadget, 02 Mar 2008
I purchased this as i wanted to record freeview programs, as my PC is relativly new I did not want to break the warrenty seals to install an onboard card.
I have to admit that I have this linked to a full size antenna situated within my loft space. I decided to use WMC to control the device so have not installed the win TV softwear so far it has provided prfect picture and sound quality and along with the WMC tv softwear and EPG fullfils all of my requierments.
