Great quality and easy to use, 08 Jul 2008
I am very pleased with this digital recorder, which I am using for recording one to one interviews for my Masters degree dissertation. I have not needed an additional microphone and have found the recordings to be very good quality, even when recorded outside with building works going on in the background.
It is Mac compatible - I have used this feature to 'back-up' the recordings onto my Mac for peace of mind. I have not tried playing them back through my laptop but understand that Macs will need extra WMA software to do this.
A really small, neat easy to use, good quality product at a good price.
WS-110 Digital Voice Recorder Review, 16 Apr 2008
This item is tiny, in fact once you pull off the battery section to expose the usb plug it is about the size of an 'L' shaped memory stick.
It sounded a bit hissy at first but partly this is due to the tiny speaker - if the device is plugged into a usb port (its detected like a memory stick) and the voice file dragged over and played on my computer it is perfectly clear. I have a linux operating system so it works even on that.
To get it even clearer I plugged in an external microphone and on playing back the file on my computer there is no noise/hiss. An external microphone cuts down on noise from holding the device itself and pressing its buttons as it picks up every little bit of sound.
With or without a microphone it is clear, it has a number of settings to cut out low or high frequency sounds but I haven't played with them yet.
Those are my first impressions and I am very happy with it.

great piece of kit, 12 Aug 2008
Nice pice of kit although the buttons and screens are a bit small, but the qulity of sound is out of ths universe.
There is one major draw back though, and that is that the supplied software dose not work with vista and you have to go online to get the correct software for this operating system.
Apart from that it is easy to set up with P.C. and dose exactly what it says on the box.
My reccomendation is that if you are looking for a portable music player then consider this device.
You will not be disapointed.
Best equipment for portable Music enjoyment but....., 03 Aug 2008
the older Hi-MD units such as Mz-RH910 had an excellent display for titiling and seeing what you are listening to.This unit's display gives only the track number or peak vol graph, you have to look at the remote for any track names etc which is a pain. That aside, you MUST get this over an ipod if you like CD quality listening, and if you must use mp3s it plays them as well, so really nothing but praise here. As well as the build quality and ease of uploading/downloading songs from the computer using sonicstage 4.3 which is Vista compatible ! go on, treat yourself while you can....this is the last MD available and may be deleted soon.
REVOLUTIONARY SOUND QUALITY!!!!, 15 Jun 2008
GREAT FOR USE AS A FANTASTIC SOUND QUALITY MINI STEREO IN THE HOME OR CAR AND BRILLIANT RECORDER FOR MUSICIANS/JOURNALISTS, BUT NOT GOOD AS A DURABLE MOBILE PERSONAL STEREO IN THE POCKET FOR EVERY DAY USE COMPARED TO MOST MP3 PLAYERS AND THE IPOD.
Advantages:
This is an awesome sounding device! BY FAR richer and more quality sound than the IPOD!!! (on the condition you invest in some good quality headphones to go with it, the ones supplied are a bit naff) Perfect for the music enthusiast who notices the hisses and imperfections that other md/mp3 players allow.
It's also brilliant for recording if you are a musician which is the main reason I bought it. You can record high quality recordings with the included mini stereo mic and it's perfect if you want a good quality recording but can't be bothered with the recording process - if you just want to get some live tracks down, and you can even transfer the recordings on to your mac/pc and then burn them on to CD!! Its also perfect for recording lectures/bootlegging as the stereo mic is tiny and can be clipped on to a t-shirt/shirt quite easily and is fairly discreet.
The other great thing about it is that you can record from your existing stereo from older mediums (tape/vinyl) and put on to your computer - so you can effectively put all your old vinyl/tape collection on to computer and then burn to cd!! i love this idea because i love the warm tone that you get from vinyl! and i have a lot of old tapes!
As with all Hi-MD's it has the advantage as well of being able to store 1Gig of music per MD.
Overall: It is the revolutionary sound quality, superior recording facility and MP3 caliber audio storage which are the best features of this product.
Disadvantages:
My pet hate with this item is the unhelpful "remote control" device. It is not very user friendly. Although it's not too hard to work out it's not practical - apart from skipping from track 1 to 2 and random play every other function was awkward to use when on the move. It is also not durable, for example mine broke really easily - it just snapped! now for all its awkwardness to use - without use of the remote i cannot use some of the functions like move from album to album anymore, or altering the sound and even moving from track to track now is difficult using the metal slide thing - (badly designed) because i have used it a fair amount now it has got loose! it kind of goes up one track and then down again! highly annoying! Also with the remote after a while one ear of the headphones kept cutting out, yet plugged straight into the recorder without the remote it was fine.
Another disadvantage is having to key in every track (to name them): you must do this with the remote as well! this is highly time consuming! and also the visual display is limited, it would be better to have more of an IPOD style visual display if possible, as sometimes its not clear what track you are on and is fiddly to use the menus.
Also Mac users beware! there is no facility on the mac to transfer audio data from CD or Hard-Drive to the player - you can only do vice versa. This was disappointing for me.
Also it is not durable really as a mobile device - you could probably not put it loose in your pocket for very long or it may get damaged, especially if you were jogging or having a kick-around or mucking around with your mates. Certainly if you dropped it it would be likely to break and you can't chuck it about like you can other MP3 players or IPODS. This means of course you have to get a case for it to protect it and as well that takes up a lot of room in your pocket along with alternative MD's etc. again compared to the IPOD.
Overall: not useful as an every day mobile personal stereo.
VERDICT: Glad i bought it cos of the quality of sound and for the recording capabilities on it.
So good, i think i might buy another one......before they're no longer available !!, 03 Jun 2008
The Sony MZ-RH1, is without doubt, the best portable audio device i've ever owned !! I own previous Sony model MD players, but have never ventured into the Hi MD market before now...... i can only say i wish i had purchased one, sooner !
I haven't tried out all the various functions as yet, but have to say this is the best souding player i've ever heard ! My old MD recordings, sound great on this player too !
Transferring from audio CD, couldn't be easier using the MD simple burner softwear, ( this way, you don't use up any space on your PC's hard drive )
I would recommend anyone, considering buying a portable audio device, to go with this option. You won't be disappointed !!
Best portable for REAL music lovers., 08 Apr 2008
I got into minidisc 10 years ago - saw it fade as hard disc and flash players came along. I bought my first Hi-MD machine (MZ-NH1) 4 years ago to keep my hand in with the format, but also dabbled with hard disc and flash (yes they are convenient for storing several gigabytes of music and gimmicky video if that's your style). But when it comes down to functionality and real music features nothing can touch minidisc.
The MZ-RH1 is the pinnicle of MD development - record in full CD quality (PCM) as well as at the highest quality compressed bit-rates. "Record" being THE word here - try recording digitally at PCM onto an i-pod, or other flash/HD machine. No chance.
Playback quality is superb through the built in digital amp. Absolutely no hiss, and at 256 or 352 bit rates you cannot tell the difference between full CD quality. The unit also has a LINE-OUT feature to play back through your hi-fi or car stereo without fidgeting with volume controls etc.
For old MD fans you can even upload your old minidisc recordings made at SP.
As far as Sonicstage software is concerned, I have never experienced a problem with it. It is really simple to use (those who complain must be really thick!!).
This machine is really sleek, and although slightly bigger than todays flah players and i-pod hard disc machines, it is still small and light. Added bonus over the flash and HD players is the removable battery.
Don't follow fashion/fads - use your ears and listen, record and enjoy a real portable music machine.

HiMD is perfect for portable audio. The sound quality is excellent, with even the cheaper players beating any MP3 player produced to date. Less susceptible to shocks or drops than HD players & with removable batteries they last a LOT longer than your average iPod. The comparatively lower capacity can be a downside but what good is it to have all your music with you when it all sounds rubbish because it's being played on sub-standard equipment??? minidisc, 05 Sep 2005
When you can get them to work they are amazing but there are simple rules you must follow so as to not infuriate the darned sonicstage software or it will not let you use put more music on the disc and will make you wipe it blank, destroying all the effort you put into copying the tracks onto it. never ever: edit track names or anything for that matter on the minidisc player itself let media player 9 synchronize your music when it detects your player
Mp3 vs. HiMD, 30 Aug 2005
Although by the looks of the market Mp3 players have won, that however does not mean that they are the best. It was last christmas and I decided that I had to move on from my bulky CD walkman so I decided to look in the shops and on the internet and I found a beautiful Sony HiMD walkman. I already had experience with mini disks already having a mini disk deck in my personal stereo and loved the near CD quality of the little disks (around 90 percent CD quality). Then I realised that this was one of Sony's newest line of MD players hence the Hi bit before the MD then I noticed that it could play new HIMD 1Gb disks whcih can hold up to 40 CDs of music at maximum compression, however i prefer having about 10 CDs on each disk (this way the quality of the music is extremely high and comes within about 5 percent of CD quality!). However please take note that these disks are not compatable with normal MD players or decks, this is the only downside to the disks! These disks are a bit pricey but are well worth it and when you realise that they can hold every type of computer memory file e.g. Word files, pictures, movies, and if you really want MP3. This makes these cheaper than a half a gig (512Mb) memory sticks and have a higher capacity. The best quality about these disks is their flexibility to hold all types of media and all memory files. My brother has a iPod and the difference in quality between my HiMD player (and disks of course) and his iPod is undiscribable, in simple terms iPod 3 star HiMd player 10 star Join the revolution, join the HiMD players and disks over a cheap MP3 player after all you get what you pay for.
Excellent!, 03 Jun 2005
Better sound quality than an ipod and CHEAP storage for a huge number of tracks and VERY reliable. Hi-MD beats the MP3 market in every way. With players now so cheap (SONY MZ-NH600) don't be swayed into the ipod arena. I sold my ipod and went mini disc. MUCH BETTER! 40+ plus CD's on a storage medium that costs £5.00, can't be bettered.
Whats the point on having a Hi-MD Player without discs?, 11 Apr 2005
I have to stress, that people with normal MD's should NOT buy this item, thinking it would work on your system it doesn't! The disc holds a massive 1GB (1024MB) on the same size as the original disc, which originally only could hold about 150MB, it holds more information then a CD-R! If you are thinking about cost to use ratio well then lets see, this product is just under £5 for this you not only can fit upto 45Hours of almost CD quality music, but you can even store your own personal files, pictures, videos, or what ever! What would you rather have? a disc that is easier to control and only cost £5 per disc, or spend about £15.99 per blank SD card for only 512MB (half a gig!) Yeah these are a little bulkier then SD cards, but they are more cost effective. But the main feature is the storage of these cheap discs, yeah £5 per disc may seem steep But 45 Hours of music on one disc is a lot! But for those who are a little short on cash, why not get a normal MD and use the HIMD format on that, you will double the size of the disc (5 hours becomes something like 10 hours). Either way, a must buy if you bought a HI MD recorder.

Those are my first impressions and I am very happy with it. great piece of kit, 12 Aug 2008

the older Hi-MD units such as Mz-RH910 had an excellent display for titiling and seeing what you are listening to.This unit's display gives only the track number or peak vol graph, you have to look at the remote for any track names etc which is a pain.

Best case I could find - could be bigger, 29 Mar 2005
I found that I could fit an extra 50% capacity into the case - pitty they didn't supply more sleves. I ended up buying three of them and puting 150% capacity into two cases and dumping the spare case. Ended up expensive but it did the job for me.
minidisc case, good but.., 08 Oct 2004
i have this minidisc case for a bit more than a year now, the slots for the minidiscs are good in the way they hold everything in place, the bad thing, is that the seams on the edge of each slot are wearing out, the plastic join is seperating.it is pretty good value for money, protects your minidiscs. if you want it to transport your discs then buy it. if you want this to store your discs like a cd rack, then buy it, but dont expect the sleeves to stay in the same condition from the day you bought it. buy, but insert and take discs gently from the slots.
Does the job..., 25 Feb 2004
Brought this case just after xmas, even after reading some of the reviews posted [below]. Ok, I did have to cut each sleave along the top - but thats only because I prefer to keep the minidisc in its case aswell, this has originally been designed in preferance of ditching the minidisc case altogether, and just placing the minidisc itself into the wallets provided - either way you can do both!! It is good - its works, looks nice etc. and yeah ok it could do with holding a few more, but hey you can always buy another one - it aint much!!
Good case, shame it can't hold more discs, 13 Jan 2004
The case works pretty well, it's easy to put mini discs in, get them out and it keeps them safe. Not sure why the previous reviewer had problems and had to cut the sleeves, the discs just have to be inserted diagonally without the outer plastic holders. It could be improved however by being able to hold more discs, either on the reverse of the each sleeve or by simply having more of them. There is enough space in the case for at least 36 discs! Don't seem able to buy spare sleeves either which is a shame.
Difficult to use, 05 Aug 2003
I was very pleased to find a wallet that holds a decent number of MDs. Imagine my disappointment when I tried to put the MDs in! The holes are not large enough!!! Yes, they have to be a tight fit so that the MDs don't fall out BUT to get them in I had to cut the plastic holders about 5-10mm to get them in!! Very poor.

Very poor.
the minidisc case, 06 Mar 2006
it is a very useful case to have and protects your mini disc player nicely. there are only a few down falls: when you wear it on your arm it sticks out a lot and could be banged into. The arm strap is too big even when it is on as tight as can be. The apperance is very nice and i would use it for sport as well as around the house. The mini disc player fits nicely but it is a bit too tight to fit in a minidisc as well. but over all it is the a very good perchase and is valuble!!!
Great for running, 07 Oct 2005
I'd been looking for a suitable case for my MD for use while running, but all the belt-based options kept either falling off, or wobbling around so much I wished they'd fall off! This case holds the MD nice and snug (no wobbling!) and because I can wear it on my upper arm, I only need a short earphone lead, so even less to flail about. I take off the remote and just plug in short 'phones, put the disc on random and away! Been very pleased with it so far. I tend to only run in the dry, so I've not tested the waterproofness (is that a word?). However, it looks good for a short shower, just to keep the worst of the water out of the player. In short, good for this job.
Bulbous Baggage, 12 Jul 2005
Okay, it looks sleek from the outside; but this "practical" piece of kit is rather dull. And, before you ask, it isn't flush either. It really sticks out when you wear it; I have never felt comfortable wearing it. There are plenty more MD holders from Sony that will do the job better than this. For example, I got one with my Hi-MD recorder for free. Remember: always pick a soft material - it will still protect the scratches; and the Shock Absorbant body of the MiniDisc system will take care of any damage caused. Think twice.
Very well made but..., 30 Jun 2005
I like everything about this case except even the tightest setting is slightly to big for me... Once the minidisc is in the weight pulls the case down my arm. It's a great buy for any 'normal' person but don't bother if you're very small.
Good for exercise and working “Hands Free”!, 02 Mar 2004
I purchased this case with my mini disc player with some reservations. The thought of the mini disc being attached to my arm sounded as if it would hinder me. I took some getting used to although I felt the benefits immediately. I work in IT and mover from computer to server to computer frequently. Often forgetting about my player on the desk and straining my ears! This case takes care of that, and I can take an extra mini disc about with me. I haven’t used it for running yet because of the snow but im sure it will be fine. The only problem is a small amount of pressure on the arm and it is a little tricky getting the pressure so that the mini disc doesn’t slip down the arm or cut the circulation off!!, but feels much better than strapping to your belt!
